General and Preventative Dentistry:

Maintaining oral health through the recommended regular comprehensive check-ups, hygiene cleanings, and early detection of dental issues. It aims to prevent problems like cavities, excessive wear of teeth, and gum disease through treatments such as fluoride treatment, conservative resin fillings, fissure sealants, and proper oral hygiene advice, helping patients maintain healthy teeth and gums for life.

Cosmetic Dentistry:

Improving smile aesthetics through teeth whitening and/or veneers. Teeth whitening, through Philip Zoom, could be conducted in the comfort of the patient's home or more rapidly in the dental office. Both options result in lighter coloured teeth without harming the enamel. Dental veneers are used to achieve the same results but also alter the appearance of teeth. Usually with minimal to no preparation, dental veneers could be offered in both resin or porcelain materials (with their respective limitations). When most teeth are involved and in the case of smile makeovers, Digital Smile Design (DSD) is employed. DSD is a modern hybrid technique that uses digital photographs to plan and visualize cosmetic dental treatments which is then displayed to patients physically with printed dental models. Following the patient's acceptance of the proposal, the dentist would then proceed with the process of enhancing the smile. This helps dentists and patients collaborate more effectively by providing a preview of the expected results before any teeth preparation is done.

Root Canal Treatment:

When the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels, becomes infected and damaged due to deep decay or injury, a root canal is necessary to retain a salvageable tooth. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, and then sealing the tooth. In many cases, a crown is placed over the tooth for added protection. Root canal treatment helps alleviate pain, restore tooth function, and prevent the need for tooth extraction.

Crowns and Bridges:

When compared to resin fillings, crowns and bridges are more protective alternatives to restoring severely damaged or replacing missing teeth. A crown is a cap placed over a damaged or weakened tooth to replace the loss of tooth structure which restores its shape, size, strength, and function. A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth to adjacent teeth or implants. Both crowns and bridges are custom-made to match your natural teeth, offering a durable and aesthetically pleasing solution to improve the appearance and function of your smile. Both crowns and bridges are made from either porcelain, metal alloy, or a combination of both. With the improvements of dental technology, most porcelain dental crowns could be fabricated in a single visit.

Surgical Extractions:

In some cases, severe tooth decay or damage may render conventional extractions unsuitable. This is also the case with impacted teeth (e.g. wisdom teeth). During the procedure, the dentist makes an incision in the gum tissues to access the tooth and may need to remove bone or divide the tooth into smaller pieces for easier removal. Surgical extractions are typically performed under local anesthesia with or without oral sedation to ensure the patient's comfort and compliance. Post-operative care is essential for proper healing and recovery. We work closely with the surgical team at Townsville Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to manage severely impacted teeth, patients with severe dental phobia, and patients who require general anesthesia.

Implants:

A longer-lasting solution to replace single or multiple missing teeth. They involve placing a titanium post into the jawbone to act as a replacement root. Once the post fuses with the bone (a process called osseointegration), a custom-made crown is attached to restore the appearance and function of the missing tooth. Implants provide a natural-looking, durable, and stable alternative to conventional dentures or bridges, offering improved acceptance, comfort, speech, and chewing ability. They also help preserve the integrity of the jawbone and surrounding teeth, making them a long-term investment in oral health. Dental implants come in various brands, sizes, material composition, and surface treatments which requires brand-specific instruments to be used for regular maintenance.

Dentures:

Removable dental appliances used to replace missing teeth and restore the appearance and function of the mouth. They can be full (replacing all teeth in the upper or lower jaw) or partial (replacing only a few missing teeth). Made from acrylic, metal alloy, or a combination of both, dentures are custom-designed to fit well in the mouth. They help improve speech, chewing, and facial aesthetics, providing a cost-effective solution for those with multiple missing teeth. Regular adjustments and care are essential to ensure the best fit and functionality of dentures. We work closely with the prosthetic team at Dentures Direct for full immediate dentures, immediate denture adjustments, and overdentures (dentures sitting on implants).

Mouthguards and Splints:

Mouthguards are protective devices worn over the teeth to prevent injury during sports or other high risk activities. They help safeguard against broken teeth, jaw injuries, and damage to soft tissues like the gums and cheeks. Unlike over the counter types, custom fitted mouthguards offer the best protection, as they are tailored to the unique shape of your mouth, ensuring comfort and a secure fit. Additionally, rigid mouthguard i.e. splints can be used to prevent teeth grinding (bruxism) during sleep, protecting both teeth and the jaw. Regular use of a mouthguard is essential for anyone engaged in contact sports or activities that pose a risk to dental health.
